Web Log 1: Class Survey

Personal information:
1. Katherine O'Brien, Dallas Pennsylvania, kobrien12@jcu.edu
2. Katherine or Kath
3. I'm interested in teaching EC, most likely kindergarten. If John Carroll was able to certify me in secondary pyschology that's what I'd really want to teach.
4. I'm into music and I love going to small shows and discovering new bands. I also enjoy basketball. I feel as if it's one of the things I enjoy for myself and don't have to worry about making other people happy while I'm playing. If I'm having a bad day my favorite thing to do is put music on and just go shoot. My family is the most important thing to me. My best friend is my twin sister Kristen. It's hard to explain but I really do think twins have a closer bond than other people and it's great knowing she'll always be there for me.

Learning Style and more:
5. In order for me to take intellectual and creative risks in a classroom I have to feel comfortable with the teacher. If I think a teacher is going to jump down my throat by expressing my true thoughts instead of the ones I know they are probably looking for, I'll most likely take the easy route. Liking the course material is also an important factor.

6. a) I usually volunteer and participate a good amount in all my classes
b) There are days where I don't do readings, but for the most part I usually complete all assignments
c) I'm a good student when I want to be
d) Preferred learning style is interesting lectures, not just taking notes off of power points. I recopy my notes into another notebook as a study habit. This allows me to see what I need to read about if I don't understand what the notes mean.
e) The first thing I do when I cannot understand something is try and find it in the book or ask someone else in the class.

7. I'm shy, sometimes that hinders me from wanting to participate in class.

Technology Section
8. I'll have to get back to you on what I think is the most important technological invention in history.
9. Only because of habit and that I am now accustomed to using them everyday, my cell phone and computer are some what essential to daily use. They are just convenient.
10. I'll use a computer to do a lot of my homework, my phone to talk or text people, and sometimes watch TV.
11. Seeing kids in elementary school with cell phones seems extreme to me. What real reason do they need a cell phone? I didn't have a cell phone until I got my liscenes and I survived elementary and middle school just fine. Cell phones being used in class hinder students from fully learning. Cell phones are also promoted excessively.
12. I'm not sure what to expect from this class or what we're really going to be covering but my sister took the class and enjoyed it and learned a lot so just keeping doing what you've been doing and I'll probably think it was the most meaning and relevant educational technology course I’ve ever experienced. EVER.

About Dr. Shutkin:
13. (1) Where is your favorite place you've traveled to; where would you want to go if you could go anywhere? (2) What do you think the greatest technological invention is?
